Johannesburg : South African star batsman Hashim Alma was named the country's Test cricket captain on Tuesday, replacing retiring Graeme Smith who led the side for a decade.
Amla, 31, who made his test debut against India in Kolkata 10 years ago, said he was "glad and humbled" by the appointment.
I was actually quite surprised when I heard that Hashim Amla had made himself available for the job. Over the years he has been a reluctant leader.
While I have nothing against Hashim and wish him great success in the job, I feel that AB de Villiers has reason to be disappointed. Until recently he seemed the most likely person to succeed Graeme Smith as test captain.
SA as a nation has come a long way since de days of apartheid
That bein said I don't believe de bearded one is the right man for de the job. As Gina said, he hasn't demonstrated any leadership qualities, he's a quiet docile man

Very transparent indeed. I almost laughed as much as I did below.

[/quote] Ha ha ha ha. I do not think I have laughed as hard for this for a long for eons....and still laughing. Cronje was very effervescent, was he?
Doclie to include well behaved, gentle, humble etc qualities you want of your Captain and it does not make him ineffective. Apart from the disgraced Cronje, I can think of Sir Frank Worrell, Mike Brearley, the disgraced Azharuddin, Strauss, Rohan Kanhai as docile but effective Skippers.
May I also point out Amla has Captaincy pedigree having captained at age group including South Africa to the 2002 U19 World Cup final. He also captained Kwa Zulu Natal 10 years ago.
Not sure if that is adequate leadership qualities for you Undameister and Gina. Today look at George Bailey, very docile man, always with a smile very unAustralian indeed.
Would I have advise The Mighty Hsh to lead his country? Yes.
AB is not much younger than Hash and hopefully he will be vc.
Great choice as a resonablly docile Smith has left when the Saffers are starting to show some cracks.
