WIPA thanks Darren Sammy

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- The West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) on Wednesday publicly thanked former captain Darren Sammy for his service to West Indies Test cricket.

“He (Sammy) was a valued player and led the team admirably throughout his tenure as captain. We are sadden but respectful of his decision to retire from the longer format of the game, and we wish him all the best,” WIPA’s President and CEO Wavell Hinds said in a release.

At the same time WIPA also extended best wishes to new Test captain Denesh Ramdin who will lead the team in the 2014 Digicel Home Series against New Zealand.

“Ramdin is a tactical thinker, we will give our support while we expect great things from him as the new captain of the West Indies Test team,” added Hinds.

Sammy was replaced as the West Indies Test captain by Ramdin last week and subsequently announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.

However, he retains the captaincy of the Twenty20 team and is available for limited-overs selection.

According to WIPA the Windward Islands all-rounder played 38 Tests for the West Indies and captained the teams in 30 of those matches. He was instrumental in leading the West Indies during the emergence of franchise Twenty20 cricket that left the West Indies without several of its premier players.

As a cricket fan, I did not like the way Sammy was unceremoniously ousted from captaincy of the W.I. But we also know that historically, the WICBC does not operate with dignity when it comes to respect of the players.
But also, captaincy is not a birthright, and Sammy should not have retired if he felt hard-done by the decision of the WICBC not to retain his service as captain...
Sammy is not the best player on the team, but I think he's a "Good Lad" for the game...on and off the field.

As a cricket fan, I did not like the way Sammy was unceremoniously ousted from captaincy of the W.I. His dismissal was not without having had a run of failures, personally and otherwise for almost 4 year. He was formally approached by the selectors so what is unceremonious about it?
But we also know that historically, the WICBC does not operate with dignity when it comes to respect of the players. This is true when we talk about the likes of Haynes, Greenidge and a few other greats so this does not apply to a journeyman like Sammy. He snubbed the WIPA on the lead from H&H and even now they shamelessly thank him but it is the diplomatic thing to do.
But also, captaincy is not a birthright, and Sammy should not have retired if he felt hard-done by the decision of the WICBC not to retain his service as captain...Too right it is not a birthright so why a man who after 8 mediocre test performances and never again going to be selected was placed as captain and had that role for almost 4 years during which he has failed miserably on all counts, (batsman, bowler and captain), and the team has regressed?

He seems nice enough but that is no qualification for test captaincy or in his case, captaining in all formats for almost 4 years! He is probably the worst player to have played test cricket formate Windies over such an extended period. Let us see if Ramdin is given a 4 year run!
Surely you are making your comments on an emotional level and not a logical cricketing level?
I just hope he is now relegated just to T20s with no room for him in ODIs!

Sammy is a black man and support my own.  so I will not shoot Sammy in the mawnin ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL::

but we living in the west indies and if we are to progress we have to build a proper way of doing tings that is based on merit.  we cant have things like Sammys appointment. out of the blasted question.  and the amount of unbalanced teams sammy led

Sammy was an all round bad choice for west indies cricket.  he shud never have been captain at all. 

he never supported the players so why is wipa pandering to Sammy now, when he has had his comeuppance...when he used to diss the wipa...and he has no more power ::confused::

Tempers, reportedly, flared during the meeting between the two parties, in which Gayle -

who has been asked to retract statements he made in a radio interview in April -

was also present. A WICB source alleged Ramnarine had :

WIPA admitted to there being verbal disagreements and that Ramnarine had got out of

his chair at one point, but claimed he had neither lifted the chair nor tried to hit Hilaire. ::LOL::
