Why doesn't Shiv deserve to be the highest run scorer in the history of West Indies cricket ? Is it because he is not black ?
Some thoughts...
1. Shiv is no Lara, Sobers, Viv or Headly. Being the "highest run scorer" makes him look better than he is.
2. Accumulator players tend to be overrated. Watch how Indians treat Sachin and overlook Dravid. Stats dont tell everything.
3. I would argue Shiv deserves the "highest run scorer" title precisely because he is Indian. Indo-Caribbean batsmen are under-represented, underappreciated and repeatedly get the short-stick. Indo-pride is good. Who knows, it may inspire future greats.
4. Shiv is an unsung work horse and deserves it. He is also the only batsman of substance we have had since 2007.
5. Shiv has to put up with constant, please excuse my French, jackassery everytime he goes out to bat. Give the man a title.
6. Shiv is great, but not a great great. "Most runs" has certain connotations. Like it or not, it conveys the idea that he was "the greatest west indian batsman", which is far from true.

* Listen! Shiv will be the first to tell you that he never wants to be compared to any West Indian greats.
* Shiv has carved his own niche in cricket and he is contented being Shiv Chanderpaul.
* Regarding Shiv being a great batsman----the Rev looks at it this way.
* You have the elite or extraordinary greats---these are the batsmen who have dominated their respective eras:
1928-48: Bradman
1954-71: Sobers:
1976-91: Richards
1989-2006: Lara and Tendulkar
* Those are the elite and extraordinary greats.
* But then you have other batsmen who have put up great numbers----these are what I deem the ordinary greats----batsmen like Ponting, Dravid, Kallis, Border, Chanderpaul, Waugh, Sangakkara, etc
BOTTOM LINE:
[size=14pt]Shiv is favorite player on the West Indies team. I would like to see him end his career scoring 12K+ runs at a 50+ average with 100+ scores over 50. But even if he were to stop playing today I'd rate him the same way I rate Steve Waugh, Alan Border and Rahul Dravid----as an outstanding batsman who put up great numbers. [/size]
