Ian Botham sure was not obsessive and spent more time away from the middle doing other things. At the same time Gooch was, especially about fitness and practice.
Different strokes but it is not easy to suffer any form of mental illness but it is more common than we think.
1 in 3 in the UK suffer from some form of mental illness/ fatigue at some point. The key issue is to what extent it affects the individual.
In cricket we know Treschotick, Trott, Yardy were all affected quite badly.

Like in any other competitive sport, you have to have a very strong mental attitude at all points of time. Unless and until you do something exceptional, your place in the team is always under risk from competition.
This is what is keeping many players on their toes and even if they just fail a couple of times, it would take them months to come back into the national team.
In my opinion, this constant risk is what is burning out so many players.
