What a season Viv had playing for Somerset that year, scoring 1836 runs (9 centuries, 6 fifties) in 24 innings at an average of 76.50. Yet incredibly, Somerset won only won match all year and finished bottom of the table.

That Somerset team in '85 had some pretty good players too: Richards, Joel Garner, Botham, Peter Roebuck and Vic Marks to name but a few.

In those days 99 percent of those country games ended in draws. The first team would make about 300, then the other team would make a 300 and then the game would slowly fizzle to a draw.
And if Viv had Botham in his team, he probably partied hard off the field. Botham, meanwhile, probably gave Somerset a slow-as-hell century every game, causing non-stop draws.
EDIT - google says Botham was the highest averaging batsman in county cricket for that year. He averaged 100ish. Viv was 4th highest. So Somerset were piling on big runs yet going nowhere.
