James Taylor was denied a maiden international century by an umpiring error as Australia opened their World Cup campaign with a crushing defeat of England.
"Following Australia's 111-run win over England in the Group A ICC Cricket World Cup clash at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday night, the Playing Control Team (PCT) met and reviewed the final ball of the game which resulted in James Anderson being given run out," an ICC statement said.
"Article 3.6a of Appendix 6 of the Decision Review System Playing Conditions states that the ball should have been deemed dead when the batsman (James Taylor) was given out LBW. No further runs or dismissals were possible.
"The PCT spoke to the England team management and acknowledges that the game ended incorrectly and that an error was made."

What happens if England need net run rate to go through to k/o stage and
inns v Australia shortened due to umpiring ignorance not error ?

Wow, that's really bad. Umpires are only human and mistakes can be made out in the middle, but how on earth is it possible that the people responsible for this mess-up didn't know the rules?
I'm not a fan of the Australian team, but I don't see how they could be blamed. It's my experience that players from all teams will appeal for anything, but the umpires have the final say.

This should NEVER have happened :-[ ..... lil James Taylor handled this unfortunate error very well but this game did not end properly >
The integrity of the umpiring process disappears when it becomes clear the umpires do not know the rules.

If umpires - or match referees - don't know the rules, are they really worthy of being on the Elite Panel?
The ICC must find out where the mistake originated and why it was not prevented. Did the on-field umpires agree that the run-out was legal? If they weren't sure, why did they rush in to a decision? Surely Taylor's suggestion of a dead ball gave them pause for thought, reason to have someone check the rulebook. Did they ask the third umpire, or the match referee?
