PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Windward Islands Volcanoes crumbled under spin as Guyana Jaguars hammered them by 142 runs in the second game of the NAGICO Super50 at Queen’s Park Oval here yesterday.
Veerasammy Permaul led the spin attack with an impressive four wicket haul that dismantled a run chase, bowling the Volcanoes out for 85 in 33.4 overs after the Jaguars totalled 227 for six of their 50 overs.
Their innings were built on a half century from Rajendra Chandrika, 49 from Vishaul Singh, 43 not out from Anthony Bramble and Chris Barnwell’s knock of 34. A 34-run opening stand between Johnson Charles and Devon Smith and a stubborn unbeaten top score of 26 from middle order batsman Sunil Ambris were all the resistance Windwards could offer.
Ambris fought to revive the chase by batting throughout the rest of the innings without scoring a boundary as wickets fell around him.
Smith was stumped by Anthony Bramble for 13 and Charles got to 21 before he was trapped lbw to Permaul who finished with remarkable figures of 10 overs five maidens 12 runs four wickets.
Devendra Bishoo and Captain Chris Barnwell picked up two wickets each with all the other Windwards batsmen scoring less than ten runs.
Windwards, who won the toss and elected to field, had their opponents on the ropes with an early breakthr
Mervin Mathews and Delorn Johnson had removed Trevon Griffith and Shivnarine Chanderpaul cheaply to send Guyana sliding at 15 for two, before they were pegged back further at 75 for three, when Devon Smith ran out Chandrika for a top score of 51 which included six fours.
However Vishaul Singh hit three fours in his score of 49 and stared in two half century partnership that reconstructed the Guyana innings.
Singh put on 60 runs for the third wicket with Chandrika and a 75 run stand for the fourth wicket with Barnwell.
Shane Shillingford offset Guyana’s momentum, momentarily, by picking up the wickets of Singh and Barnwell-both falling with the score on 150.
But Bramble kept Guyana on course towards a competitive total by smashing three fours and three sixes in an aggressive knock of 43 towards the end of the innings.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
