If I remember correctly, in the last six years, they only won an away test series vs WI and Bangladesh. At the six year mark, they won one vs NZ.

I am sure you are correct.
The top four almost never lose a home series. That's why when it happens it is really special.
I remember England winning a series in India and that was a tremendous achievement.
India put up a good fight in Australia but when Australia last toured India they got trounced.
I regard Dhoni as a great cricketer and here I am including tests, ODIs, T20s.

BCCI Secretary full of crap!
Any cricketer who makes a decision to retire after a "lot of soul searching and deliberations" would have done so at the end of the series or even at a home series!!!
There was definitely pressure from BCCI! Maybe they are the one who did the "soul searching...." ::LOL::

I think Dhoni's career as test captain is par for the course. He captained the team in transition after the retirement of Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly, Kumble etc. The team went through some growing pains, but I think the batting line up is set up well barring a couple of exceptions.Bowling and the ability to bowl teams out twice in a test abroad is India's Achilles heel. There is just isn't anyone capable and sadly there is no one in the pipeline who has the ability. Not even the best captains can win with a bowling line up of Ishant Sharma and Md. Shami. One can't blame Dhoni for the bowling failures, after all his job is to captain the team on the field and not indulge in player development.

All his cricketing life MS Dhoni has been obsessed with keeping the emotion out of it. He was never going to make leaving an emotional act. No farewell Test, speech or even press conference. Boom! Gone!
An excellent article on MS Dhoni .....
