in this instance in use of stats I agree with the Rev.  I can see no way to defeat this one..no extenuating collection of contextual content that makes these figures moot...

3 batsmen at 50x/60x..that's domination  no doubt about it

Vanny Baksh is an impse as a writer. 

this is a long standing debate on west indian message boards.  she is shallow, usually threadbare and reaching... for gravitas.  that is how she reads and sounds.  I have defended her long time now for specific reasons.  these reasons do not apply here.

anyhow that journalistic challenge she accepted is unnecessarily restrictive rendering the project a sort of jackass one.

why limit the number to 5.  that does not seem right. there are more to be considered.  you have to find the outstanding number of great batsmen over the time..and what is the time frame under review here..and  pick the corresponding number of writers to try to do justice to the issue.

I mean right away I could see Viv Richards must be included..maybe David Gower, Graham Gooch, Ian Chappelle etc

they have to define the term 'modern' batsman

* The Rev provided mathematical evidence of Lara's DOMINANCE.

* Only 3 batsmen in history have averaged 50+ with the bat along with a 60+ STRIKE RATE---Richards, Lara and Hayden.

* Baksh and others were comparing 5 batsmen---Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis, Dravid and Lara.

* Lara averaged 50+ with a 60+ strike rate----the others did not.

* Therefore Lara stands at the head of the pack.

why not?  RBK is the greatest in my book....and I know certain "president" who believes the same! And RBK did not even average 50!

But when he walks to the wicket to bat on any ground around the world, it was the most electrifying moment!  No other batsman in the world created such an effect on the crowd!! NONE!
