THE BOWLING SOLUTION To WI Cricket Crisis

It is true you need better performing players to give yourself the best chance to compete and win.

However you cannot manufacture what you do not readily have overnight.

The solution lies in addressing far deeper rooted issues and since many of those issues will not be resolved because of, amongst others, protectionism, the future does not look promising.

There is much evidence to suggest the administration was equally cumbersome in the period of dominance so that said structure, and its increasing unwieldiness, is even less capable of dealing with and resolving problems in lean times. That structure was sustained by genuinely God gifted players churning out dominant results for a long time.

It would appear very little progress have been made under the current leadership, despite what might be their best efforts and intentions, so changes are required now as a sustained length of time has already been allowed to them with no marked returns.

Therefore the offices of the Coach, Captain and Selectors must surely come under serious question.

In the face of events, it appears no one will do the right thing and step down so the real question might be, is there the will from those above, Director of Cricket upwards, to make those immediate changes?

From what I have seen, the latter seems highly unlikely so the chaos may continue.

This is a significant challenge Pybus' faces and the manner in which he deals with this will underline his tenure. A baptism of fire...

Pybus' record shows he is no push over, having left previous posts for not being allowed to execute those things he was employed to do, so I do not expect him to sit back and be a yes man.

Even if changes are made following the New Zealand tour, expectations have to be managed.

It is protocol to involve the Coach in shaping the future but given what has happened, is Gibson best placed to be part of that process?

This thread is lending credence to the view that it does not matter :

whom the Captain or the Coach is !

The oft touted view " Cupboard is bare " may become the mantra for Losers !

Scouting has become a thing of the past , so we may as well give IRELAND our TEST spot !

there can only be a problem when the powers  that be  acknowledge that there is one and I haven't heard  from them yet. To them it is "no problem mon"

perfect answer

we have some players...nurturing is always part of the mix..scouting and discovering talent and doing yuh best to ensure it come through.

a lot of money is spent by the wicb on staff.  what is  now 60-70 people working at Factory Road.  but who are they and what do they do?

all arse-licking bureaucrats for sure, playing office politics with their time to get ahead while supporting the nefarious wicb way.  but why isnt some of that cash spent on scouting?

fi'ah some office workers and develop a scheme to find players and see them through to the highest level

Rev,

I love the way you manipulate and present numbers. Fascinating indeed.
Numbers are the end result of talent, planning and proper management. You have to consider cause and effect. WI cricket team sucks because of bad management.
I am saying that our bowlers can produce better numbers (30 ave) if we prepare and support them better and if we have a better management structure in place.

A few years ago I played for 2 teams. In one team I did really well and in the other I sucked. I was totally not motivate...they were not well managed and lost badly every week. Players need to be motivated and surrounded by the right people to help make them even more successful.

to quote the great Guyanese engineer, Dr. Vincent Adams, “There is total lack of leadership and when you have that there is a breakdown in discipline on the field”

I agree with your numbers...but they are the end result of bad management and planning...I truly believe, deep down, that we can do much better with the talent we have. When a skunt like Sammy is cappo for life and a player like Sarwan can't get into the team - you are doomed to failure.

Why Holder? Because he's tall, scary and Ambrose has supposedly been mentoring him.

As everyone knows, WI cricket will not improve until every island has competitive cricket at the high school and university level, and many more inter-island games are played. You need games all through the year.

The English county cricket schedule is limited by weather factors. In the West Indies, we dont have to stop for winter. We can play 4 times as many domestic cricket games as England, but we dont. They're playing 15 to 20 test matches a year per county (16 counties- almost 400 tests!), and much more limited over games.

You also need a body dedicated to recording and monitoring stats at each level, and algorithms to help the selectors keep an eye on the players. The West Indies cricket team is the upper level of a system whose base (primary school, high school, inter-island) is amateurishly managed. The top gonna be rotten if the bottom rotten.

Lara and Viv weren't freaks of nature. They playing cricket non stop since they were kids. Today we got Dwayne Bravo making music videos and Gayle opening bars instead of playing cricket.
