Noorulain Agha, fashion designer and wife of former West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago cricketer Daren Ganga, on Saturday launched her boutique, Noor, on O’Connor Street in Woodbrook.

The boutique features Agha’s unique designs inspired by the West Indian woman.  Agha described her latest designs as luxurious and comfortable clothing which women can feel confident wearing.

“There is a range of clothing; everything you need, seven days a week. There is clothing for the working woman so we have corporate jackets, a range of tops, shirts, pants and blouses. There are also evening gowns, cocktail dresses and a range of footwear and jewelry,” Agha said.

Agha said her designs are exclusive and production is ongoing. “I am thinking of designs every day.  It’s an ongoing process. My aim is to complement the body and ensure that quality comes first. My main focus is on quality and construction; they have to meet the international standards,” Agha said.

The fashion designer pointed out that her designs are mostly in silks, cotton and other natural fibres.

Agha is already seeing signs of good success.  “The launch was successful. People came out and supported me. Some people purchased items although I had not planned on any sales at the launch, but people were determined to purchase items.  It is uplifting and encouraging,” Agha said.

Born and raised in Pakistan, Agha was exposed to International fashion and culture.  Her travelling experiences added to her knowledge of the fashion industry. Her unique and unconventional ideas set her apart.

The essence of Agha’s style lies in her ability to draw inspiration from a wide variety of artistic disciplines—art, architecture, history, different cultures and the cinema and to translate them creatively into modern, dynamic, bold, yet timeless fashion that exudes elegance.

Agha always asseverates the importance of couture-like craftsmanship and there is absolutely no compromise on quality.

Each design is controlled carefully from initial sketch down to the finished product.

There is keen attention to detail and ensuring perfection in each piece, maintaining exclusivity of the product, using fine silks, cottons, linens and natural fibres to suit the Caribbean climate.

Story Updated: Jul 21, 2010

Mail services provider TTPost yesterday commemorated 100 years of the presence of the Syrian and Lebanese communities in Trinidad and Tobago by issuing commemorative and decorative stamps highlighting their history and contribution to the country.

Dr Albert Hadeed, the former honorary consul for Syria, led the effort to produce the stamp and said he chose aspects of the Syrian and Lebanese history that merged with local culture.

He said he included a picture of Rahme Sabga ;

the immigrant who brought the peddling trade business to Trinidad and Tobago.

He said he included an image of The City of Grand Bazaar :

since it was modelled after a souq, a large open-air market indigenous to the Middle East,

and the ultra-modern Nicholas Tower :

which shows the entrepreneurial spirit of the Syrian and Lebanese peoples.
