A fire on unknown origin early Tuesday morning gutted several Regent Street, Georgetown Stores, including Lucky Dollar, Boyo’s and Indra’s Fashion.
The blaze started a little after 5:00AM inside a Chinese store and quickly spread, eyewitnesses say.
There are reports of a number of loud explosions in the early stages of the fire.
Fire fighters were however restricted due by lack of any working fire hydrants in the busy shopping area, forcing them to access water from the north Road canal, several yards away.
Up to later Monday the fire fighters were busy trying to contain the blaze from spreading to the City Mall.
Meanwhile, co owner of Indra’s fashion Ramdat Sheowprasad, 65 collapsed and died of a heart attack after receiving the news of the fire.
