"IT was better they cut my throat than my family".
This was the do-or-die decision made by Simon Harrilal on Sunday evening before fighting back against two thieves holding knives to the throats of his wife and daughter at their home in Penal.
The father of three was stabbed six times as he charged the thieves with a cutlass.

The father of three was stabbed six times as he charged the thieves with a cutlass.
He chopped and fought with the thieves until they ran off and climbed a fence to escape.
Harrilal and his wife, Isabelle, the proprietors of Isabelle's Bar at Penal Quinam Road, spent a night at hospital. Isabelle was stabbed twice in the head and twice in the back.

Daughter Chivannie was cut on a finger when she held on to the knife the thief was holding to her neck.
At his home yesterday, Harrilal recalled the attack. He said the thieves entered the home, located upstairs the business, around 9.30 p.m.
He was asleep, and his wife and children—Chivannie, 22, Steven, 16, and Chimille, ten—had gone to Penal to purchase burgers.
He said, "They (the suspects) didn't think I was inside. They saw the car leave and probably did not expect them to return so quickly. They thought they could ransack the house."
Harrilal said he awoke when he heard a door slam. He came out from a bedroom and saw two thieves holding knives against the throats of his wife and one daughter.
"They called out to me, saying, 'Tallman, you stay right there.' They had on 'Marvin Gaye' masks," he said.

"They said they wanted to cut their throats. I said it was better they cut my throat than their throats. I had to defend them."
He said the thieves said they wanted jewelry, cash and his car. They pulled out off my wife's wedding bands, rings and earrings. Harrilal said he quietly told his son to bring the cutlass from the kitchen.
"I asked him to get it from the kitchen and he handed me and remained in the kitchen. I put my little daughter in a washroom to protect her," he said.
The father said he grabbed the cutlass and attacked the thieves. One of them was chopped on his face. The other picked up the loot and ran. During the fight, both Harrilal and his wife were stabbed. Eventually she fainted and the second thief also escaped.
"I lost a lot of blood, but I didn't black out. I tried to run behind them too with the cutlass, but they dived over the gate," he said.
The family contacted the Emergency Health Services and Harrilal and his wife were taken for treatment at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Siparia police visited the scene and took statements from the Harrilals. No arrests had been made in the case up to late yesterday.

The sad thing is, these bandits will hide and bear that pain instead of seeking medical help, they have real belly.

Brave action by this man protecting his family as he did,but something worst could have happened here . Anyway in the heat of the moment no one knows how we may react facing this atrocity.
