Why People Believe in Conspiracies
Conspiracy theories spawn their own discourse, complete in itself and virtually immune to rational argument. Five assumptions distinguish the conspiracy theorist from more conventional patterns of thought:
appearances deceive; conspiracies drive history; nothing is haphazard; the enemy always gains; power, fame, money, and sex account for all.

Wow. Impressive.
The appeal of conspiracism is threefold. First, conspiracy theories claim to explain what others can't. They appear to make sense out of a world that is otherwise confusing. Second, they do so in an appealingly simple way, by dividing the world sharply between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. They trace all evil back to a single source, the conspirators and their agents. Finally, conspiracy theories are often presented as special, secret knowledge unknown or unappreciated by others. For conspiracists, the masses are a brainwashed herd, while the conspiracists in the know can congratulate themselves on penetrating the plotters' deceptions.

The conspiracy theorist is in many ways akin to the "deluded sheep" the conspiracy theorist disparages. Both are unable to critically put anything into historical context, and so both believe in different kinds of goofy sh*t.
From a report on US schools:
"...several studies were conducted that revealed a profound ignorance of historical matters among students. According to "The Nation's Report Card", more than one-half of high school seniors failed to demonstrate a "basic" understanding of their nation's history...[...] with the majority of polled students obtaining a grade F."
From a report on the top colleges in the United States (Harvard et al):
"Students surveyed at the distinguished grounds overwhelmingly believe that America is a greater threat to world peace than Islamic State terrorists, according to Campus Reform. Interviewers asked students, “Who is the bigger threat to world peace, ISIS or the U.S.?†and received a more critical view of America than the ISIS terrorists behind several beheadings of U.S. and British citizens.
“I think American imperialism and our protection of oil interests in the Middle East are destabilizing the region and allowing groups like ISIS to gain power,†said one female student, donning a crimson Harvard sweatshirt. “We are at some level the cause of it. As a western civilization, we’re to blame for a lot of the problems that we’re facing now. I don’t think anyone would argue that we didn’t create the problem of ISIS ourselves."
No doubt everyone in survey 1 thinks everyone in survey 2 is a conspiracy theorist. Everyone in survey 2 likewise probably thinks everyone in survey 1 is a dumbass, or perhaps deliberately misinformed.

The problem is historically factual things that nobody believes, so they group them with the same kind of "conspiracy theorists" that say the queen is a space alien and stuff.

Why is it that every thread on here comes back to ISIS, it would be nice to have a decent conversation on a forum that doesn't involve all the wrong that is happening. Your article on conspiracy theories is interesting and I have a few opinions I'd like to pass on but seems it's gone slightly off topic so will go and find another thread to post on.
