Grandpa hatches startling plan, young thief falls for it
March 2, 2011 | By KNews |
Although he is considered an elder, Uncle Ricky (not his real name) visualised and implemented a hilarious yet astounding remedy to deal with criminal elements who seem to have an inclination to “snatch†unsuspecting individuals’ belongings. It was almost spiritual the way the idea came to him as he rested at his East Coast Demerara residence as he contemplated a trip to a bank in the city the following day. “It was as if I knew something would’ve happened…And this idea just came into my head from nowhere!†said the 68-year-old man.
Uncle Ricky, a citizen of the United States, had only returned home to Guyana last November with an open ticket to escape the wintry atmosphere. He revealed that it was on Monday, last, he decided he would take a trip down to a city bank to make a withdrawal. But unknown to the man’s family, with whom he is staying, he had devised a strategy all by himself to protect his finances should he be attacked and robbed before returning home. “I does read how people getting rob so steady and I just decided I didn’t want to suffer such a fate. Something has to be done to stop this…it happening too steady; is like people have to expect to get robbed nowadays,†he lamented.
So with a special package neatly wrapped and placed in a bag, Uncle Ricky set out on his journey to the city, all the while anticipating something undesirable would befall him. He withdrew a total of $109,000 and sought to place the cash into his underpants for safe keeping. “I had to let the teller know what I was doing, because I didn’t want her to feel uneasy about me going into my ‘bucta’ (shorts) like that…†And so with his cash well stashed and the neatly wrapped parcel in hand, Uncle Ricky headed out of the bank. Just outside the bank there were two security officers strategically positioned. It would take the elder man awhile before deciding to leave the secured banking facility and enter into the realm of the unknown. But was it really unknown? Perhaps he had an inclination of what laid ahead.
It was soon after he crossed the street on the southern side of the bank and proceeded along the pavement on the western side of the road that trouble would approach him. It was not immediately recognised. But it was as soon as he attempted to navigate his way through some yellow cabs that a young man, with his head bowed, would snatch Uncle Ricky’s bag and bolt in a northerly direction. Onlookers observed and came to Uncle Ricky’s aid but no one dared to follow the thief – any attempt may have proven to be quite difficult given the pace that the young man took off with.
However, there was no frustration on the part of Uncle Ricky as he informed passersby that it was nothing of value that had been taken. He would go on to explain that before leaving home the morning he had defecated and wrapped it neatly in some newspaper. He then placed the newspaper and its contents into a black plastic bag before lacing it with strips of newspaper cut to the length of bills (money). Uncle Ricky revealed that he then tied everything together neatly with a string before placing them into another plastic bag then into a “brand name bag†which he had brought back from the United States. I had me plan for that thief before I lef’ home….He think he could tek me hard-earned money but was bare sh*t he get…,†said a satisfied Uncle Ricky yesterday.
Recognising that he could possibly anger the perpetrator when the contents were unfolded, the man said that he hurriedly sought to access transportation to head to the safety of his home. “I think if people plan for them thieves like that it would help to ease this crime situation,†a confident Uncle Ricky opined.
