The Panama Canal gets bigger

A deeper, wider Panama Canal with its two new flights of triple locks will double existing canal capacity and allow transit for vessels with three times the cargo when the upgraded passageway opens for business in early 2015.

Construction of the new set of locks is a 24-hour operation as Panama works toward its 2015 completion date. If the original Panama Canal was the “moon shot”' of its time, then its expansion may be the Mars trip of today.
