to be quite honest, the cane fields of Guyana would have been a far more welcoming sight than what they left behind in India.

you think it was as easy to do that as booking a flight on Air India??
many wanted to.....but few made it.
i believe that in order to do that they had to buy out their indentureship.....and none could do that for many years and by then they had started families and going back was not an option.
