I am deeply saddened by the passing of Joseph “Marco” De Souza, a committed patriot and long-standing member of the People’s Progressive Party. On behalf of the Party and my myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, friends and comrades.
Marco served the Party in various capacities and stood alongside Dr. Cheddi Jagan in the struggle to restore democracy in Guyana. For his political activism, he endured brutality and repeated imprisonment. He later served as a Member of Parliament, continuing his commitment to the Party and the country.
I join all those who knew and admired him in mourning his passing, and I hope his family finds strength and comfort during this difficult time.

A stalwart of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and former Member of Parliament, Cde Marco stood alongside Dr. Cheddi Jagan during the dark days of dictatorship. He endured brutality, persecution and repeated imprisonment in the struggle for the restoration of democracy, never wavering in his convictions or commitment to the cause.
A steadfast PPP activist in Santa Rosa and throughout Region One, he served the party in various capacities, contributing significantly to its political struggles and the advancement of the region.
His commitment to Barima-Waini extended beyond politics. He remained deeply connected to its communities and their aspirations, consistently championing their development and well-being.
His sacrifices in the struggle for democracy and his decades of service have secured him an honoured place in the history of Region One and our country.
