AZRUDDIN MOHAMED, MPs AND HUNDREDS OF GUYANESE PROTEST OUTSIDE CANADIAN AND U.S. DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, M.P., joined by 13 other Members of Parliament, including MP Sherod Duncan, and hundreds of Guyanese, participated in peaceful picketing exercises outside the Canadian High Commission and the United States Embassy on Tuesday, demanding international intervention and accountability following the October 12 shooting incident involving the Opposition Leaderโ€™s vehicle.

According to the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, the demonstrations called for an independent investigation into allegations surrounding the incident and the conduct of Special Branch Head Prem Narine.

Protesters carried placards demanding the immediate release and preservation of all relevant CCTV footage, an independent investigation into Narine, and the revocation of Canadian and United States visas held by Narine and CID Officer Rodwell Sarabo.

Sarabo, who was reportedly present on the night of the shooting, has also been implicated in allegations concerning the placement of a firearm in the Opposition Leaderโ€™s vehicle. Protesters called for an independent forensic investigation into these allegations.

They also called for Narineโ€™s deportation from Canada, subject to applicable law, and his return to Guyana to face investigation into the serious allegations against him.

CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Eight days after gunfire struck the vehicle carrying the Opposition Leader and his two employees, Eugene Thorne and Mario Mohamed, protesters expressed frustration over what they described as the Government of Guyanaโ€™s failure to adequately address the incident.

Demonstrators questioned why critical CCTV footage had not been made publicly available, why an independent investigation had not been conducted to their satisfaction, and whether sufficient steps were being taken to protect the safety of a constitutional officeholder.

They warned that allegations of political victimisation, combined with concerns about the independence of national institutions, raise serious questions about democracy, constitutional governance and the rule of law in Guyana.

MV BARIMA VICTIMS AND FAMILIES DEMAND JUSTICE

Families of victims and survivors of the MV Barima tragedy also participated in the demonstrations, renewing their calls for justice more than three months after the disaster.

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition demanded the immediate salvage and flotation of the vessel, the release of the three detained crew members, and financial compensation for all 179 victims, survivors and affected families.

It also renewed calls for the resignation and removal of Ministers Juan Edghill and Deodat Indar, citing alleged failures connected to the tragedy.

BROADER DEMANDS FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIONS

The demonstrations extended beyond the shooting incident and the MV Barima tragedy. Protesters also called for an end to political victimisation and demanded independent investigations into allegations of corruption and misconduct involving government officials and political appointees.

Their demands included scrutiny of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Commissioner of Police and government ministers, as well as the removal of Deputy Commissioner of Police Karim Baksh pending serious and independent investigations.

The protests reflected growing anger among demonstrators over what they characterised as institutional failures, selective justice, political interference and a lack of accountability.

APPEAL TO CANADA, THE UNITED STATES AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition stated that the October 12 incident had been formally brought to the attention of Canadian and United States diplomatic missions, with requests for urgent scrutiny and appropriate action by the respective authorities.

The central message from the demonstrations was clear: the October 12 shooting incident must be thoroughly investigated, relevant evidence must be preserved, and all allegations must be examined independently and transparently, regardless of political affiliation, official position or influence.

Protesters urged Canada, the United States and the wider international community to speak out in defence of democratic institutions, constitutional protections, human rights and the rule of law in Guyana.

What are your thoughts on the calls for international intervention, independent investigations and accountability in Guyana?

A senior retired judicial officer has been retained by Hana Mohamed to advise on citizenship and residency requirements and, to pilot her into elected political office. Guyana small and people like to talk yo!
