Selective recognition in the West Indies? We salute you A.I. Kallicharan!

[size=9pt]Alvin Kallicharan joined Warwickshire in 1971 following his hero Rohan Kanhai and after whom he named his son.[/size]

[size=9pt]Kallicharan was Wisden Cricketer of the year 1973 and 1983. [/size]
[size=9pt]In 1982 Kallicharan scored 3 double centuries and 5 centuries scoring over 2000 runs.[/size]

[size=9pt]To bring up his 2000th run, County Ground September 1982, he hammered Marshall everywhere in scoring 131....in a losing cause.[/size]

[size=9pt]If you have watched a lot of County cricket you will find, apart from Gavaskar, Kallicharan stood alone in thrashing his fellow Windian speedsters.[/size]

[size=9pt]Kallicharan score more than 1000 per season 12 times and over 2000 runs twice!!!!![/size]

I think he resigned himself to the fact West Indies will not select him again.


Also leading up to that Kallicharan had 3 poor tours to New Zealand (you may remember that is when Vivian had his eye surgery), England and Pakistan. In those 12 matches he averaged in the low 20s.


He played his last test against Pakistan in January 1981 and apparently, he was not informed he was not selected for the visit by England, following the Pakistan tour, so he would have had enough by then.

I think Kalli was reported to have had a shoulder operation in the summer of 1976.

His last three series spanned 1979-81 so it was some time after his operation.

In fact after his operation he average 51 against australia, 60 against India and then 51 against Australia again!

Significantly up to Kalli's last 3 series he was averaging 50! The 79-80 series against Australia he averaged 51 (as above)

To have a run of 12 poor games is significant but [size=14pt][size=12pt]he was dispensed with far too early.[/size][/size]
