It would have been so easy for my dad to be a conventional Asian father. My parents had married in what was the classical subcontinental arrangement. In 1979 Dad, then aged 24, went back to Pakistan along with his twin brother Chacha Shabir. His grandmother had selected brides for both of them. It could not be neater. There were two sisters from a family in the village she knew well. Dad rode a horse to my mum’s place and it was only on the wedding night that he first set eyes on her. Three months later he returned to Birmingham and my mum followed in April 1980 with her sister now married to Chacha Shabir.
