India is reportedly "considering" a request by Donald Trump to release stocks of a drug the US president has called

a "game-changer" in the fight against Covid-19.

Mr Trump called India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, a day after the country banned the export

of hydroxychloroquine, which it manufactures in large quantities.

The two leaders are on friendly terms, and Mr Trump recently made a high-profile trip to India.

But is India really in a position to help the US?

And does hydroxychloroquine even work against the coronavirus?

Scientists in Australia have begun testing two potential coronavirus vaccines in "milestone" lab trials.

The vaccines, made by Oxford University and US company Inovio Pharmaceutical

have been cleared for animal testing by the World Health Organization.

Australia's national science agency will assess if the vaccines work

and if they would be safe for humans.

There are several other vaccine developments occurring around the world

at the moment at extraordinary speed.

(CMC) – The director of research at the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Cuba

Dr Gerardo Guillen, says a clinical trial is now being held for a vaccine

aimed at activating the immune system to combat COVID-19.

Speaking during a recent television interview, Guillen said that the drug, called CIGB 2020
is undergoing trials at the Luis Diaz hospital in Havana with volunteer patients
suspected of being carriers of the disease.

There are 78 vaccine projects.

Some scientists have proposed a way to speed up the process
– by deliberately exposing volunteers to the virus to determine a vaccine’s efficacy.

“This approach is not without risks but has the potential to expedite candidate vaccine testing by many months,”
says Nir Eyal, a professor of bioethics at Rutgers University.

Volunteers would have to be young and healthy, he stresses :

“Their health would also be closely monitored, and they would have access to intensive care and any available medicines.”

The result could be a vaccine that would save millions of lives

by being ready for use in a much shorter time than one that went through standard phase three trials.

Harnessing the blood of recovered patients is not a new idea in medicine.

It was used more than 100 years ago during the Spanish Flu epidemic, and more recently for Ebola and Sars.

So far, only small studies have looked at its efficacy, and there is a great deal of research that needs to be done

to see how effective it will be against coronavirus.

But in the US, they say they have no shortage of people who want to help.

Bruce Sachais, chief medical officer at the New York Blood Center, said:

"People have been amazing. They keep coming out in droves.

"We have hundreds and hundreds of donors and we've been able to collect over 1,000 units already.

It's really heart-warming to see that for people who have gone through the infection, in various degrees

their main concern is 'how can I now help others?'"

Scientists say plasma won't be a magic bullet.

But while our options for treating coronavirus are so limited, the hope is it could help until a vaccine is found.

The policy of isolation and social distancing has worked. It has reduced the infection rate to a manageable one in most places. One consequence of this success is to increase the sense of safety and the belief that the virus is a hoax being used to take away civil liberties. There is no doubt that the deep state and other agendas will make use of the virus for their purposes. But the virus is definitely real and not a hoax.

73 are currently at exploratory or preclinical stages
5 of them are in the first phase of clinical trials
