The issue of the linkage between Africans and Dravidians is not something that can be dismissed as something that has no substance in it at all. Anyone who sees the Ethiopians and Tamils could see a remarkable physical resemblance and during my stay in London I mistook some Ethiopians in fact for Tamils. Perhaps some Dravidian tribes at least, are people with intimate relationship with some Africans, a notion that deserves to be investigated further. Such studies were promoted at one time by the political leaders in Senegal and some books published by the anthropologist K.P. Aravanan, now the Vice Chancellor of a university in Tamil Nadu owe to this. One of them is the collection of articles, some quite rare indeed and edited by K.P. Aravanan, and published under the title “Dravidians and Africans”. The copy I have was published in 1997 and Tamil Koottam holds the copyright.



The book also contains many photographs that reveal the presence Muruka worship among the East Africans where the Vel, the Spear and the Mayil, the peacock are unmistakably similar to those in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.



I shall select only some relevant parts from some of these essays so that they enjoy a wider publicity and the issue of the African connections, among others, of the Dravidians folks becomes a lively again. This may also serve as an antidote to the very popular and highly publicized Aryan Racialism of many scholars both European and Indian.

All Indians were Africans once. Africa is the original home of all of us. Further we share a common ancestor with chimpanzees. Even after the separation several million years ago somewhere in Africa, we share more than 99% of our genetic make up with Chimpanzees. Whether you are a North Indian or a South Indian , we share a very large heritage of genetic makeup with each other . Celebrate this fact , it is in the self interest of all of us. Out there are enemies who want to split us and sow seeds of discord . A united India with it’s people in harmony with each other is not in their interes..

The Dravidians have maintained their ancient African

Heritage. There are numerous affinities between Dravidian and

Black African culture and languages.

As in Africa the Dravidians built there both small and large

vessels from a single log or planks tied together. This method of

boat construction has been common in Africa since the rise of

ancient Egypt, and continues today in East Africa, Chad and

along the Niger River.

In both Africa and Dravidian India the people were organized

into various "caste" or corporations. Many of the corporations

such as that of the blacksmiths in Africa and India have

corresponding names e.g., Wolof Kamara and Telugu Kamara.

The are similarities in agricultural technique in Africa and

India. For example both groups used the hoe for tilling the

ground, manuring the ground to fertilize crops, terracing

irrigation and canal building. There are also affinities in

animal husbandry, and even the names of animals. For example,

sheep: Wolof xar, Brahui

(Dravidian) xar 'ram'; and cow: Wolof nag , Serere nak, Tamil

naku 'a female buffalo' and Tulu naku 'heifer'.

There are also similarities between the Dravidian and

African religions. For example, both groups held a common

interest in the cult of the Serpent and believed in a Supreme

God, who lived in a place of peace and tranquility. There are

also affinities between the names of many gods including

Amun/Amma and Murugan. Murugan the Dravidian god of the

mountains parallels a common god in East Africa worshipped by 25

ethnic groups called Murungu, the god who resides in the

mountains.
