Sir Everton Weekes: West Indies cricketing great suffers heart attack

West Indies cricketing great Sir Everton Weekes is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack overnight in Barbados.

The 94-year-old, who registered 4,455 runs in 48 Tests at an average of 58.61, is being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown.

BBC Sport was told his condition is not as bad as first feared and he should be discharged in the coming days.

Weekes made his Test debut against England in Bridgetown in 1947-48.

The Barbadian remains the only man to record centuries in five consecutive Test innings, a feat achieved in 1949.

I saw weeks when he was retired and leading Bim at the QPO

but I saw Kanhai fuh real in his prime and that was it fuh me man. I have never seen anyone better. Kanhai made an impact on me ineradicable.

it was not the hard hitting but the perfection. deh call it technique. I doh know wat to call it. it was just that no one beat him that day until he got out at 110. no one beat him, never came close..total command. no one looked capable of beating him and when he got out there was sooprise

its from Kanhai I came to understand Jazz...that it was improvisation on a sound technical basis. you had to know music to play jazz, to create, improvise and terrorize he opposition

that is what I saw that day I realized later..Kanhai the perfect batsman, technically superb yet the most creative of all batsmen

the Oz saw that too in 1961. they cud not believe it but it was right there in front of them, cutting them to shreds

imagine if Kanhai had Lara's attitude and appetite fuh huge scores ???

I am sorry I cant talk about Weekes directly, especially at this time but he is part of my cricket memory too, as ineradicable as Kanhai..

Weekes is ineradicable due to the stories of my elders and the record books my head was always into, and the commentary on the radio..as stories because Weekes did not play during my time. he was done, retired.

but for years after he was done he was a comparative figure, especially when Kanhai was batting, hitting the ball all over the place. Weeke' name would always come up in comparison, and the stories would flow endlessly..on the radio
