AN inexplicable batting collapse left the Jamaica Scorpions staring down the barrel, as left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul six-wicket haul gave the Guyana Jaguars a firm grip after day two yesterday.
The two sides are contesting the first round of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day game at the National Stadium, Providence.
The tourists lost seven first innings wickets for just 23 runs to be bowled out for a pathetic 99, handing the momentum to the Guyanese, who closed the second day on 106-4, batting a second time.
With a 67-run cushion, the three-time defending champions pressed home the advantage by finishing the day with an overall lead of 273 runs. At stumps Leon Johnson is on 11 while Bhaskar Yadram is yet to score.
It was a sensational post-lunch spell by Permaul, who captured 6-29 in just 19.5 overs, as the visitors batting crumbled in dramatic fashion after being 76-4 at one stage.
Guyanese Assad Fudadin, who opted to play for the Scorpions after refusing a local contract was the top-scorer with 39, and Captain Paul Palmer contributed 31, but the rest of their batsmen couldn’t muster much between them.

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, (CMC) – An unbroken second-wicket stand between veterans Devon Smith and Kirk Edwards helped Windward Islands Volcanoes significantly cut their deficit against Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the Regional 4-Day Championship on Saturday.
Left-handed opener Smith was not out on 56 and Edwards was not out on 35, as the Volcanoes reached 93 for one in their second innings – still trailing by 17 – before bad light stopped play with 18 overs remaining on the rain-hit third day of their first-round match at the National Cricket Stadium.
The two experienced batsmen made light work of the Hurricanes’ bowlers, after Jeremiah Louis dismissed their new captain Tyrone Theophile for a first-ball duck in the second over and a one-hour stoppage for rain.
Smith, the most prolific regional batsman, struck four fours and one six from 71 balls in close to the two hours of batting and Edwards collected just three boundaries from 78 balls in almost 1 ¾ hours.
Earlier, Nkrumah Bonner hit 69 to anchor the bottom half of the Hurricanes batting before the visitors were bowled out for 343 for a first innings lead of 110.
Sherman Lewis was the pick of the Volcanoes bowlers with 3-51 from 24 overs, Audy Alexander helped to run through the lower-order with his leg-spin, ending with 3-63 from 21.3 overs, and veteran off-spinner Shane Shillingford grabbed 2-94 from 39 overs.
Starting the day on 231 for four, the Hurricanes were set back early, when Jacques Taylor was lbw to Shillingford for 25.
Terrence Warde came to the crease and batted resolutely to put on 66 with Bonner and carry the Hurricanes to past the 300-run mark before Theophile bowled him for 28 with his uncomplicated slow-medium bowling.
Mervin Matthew fell three overs later lbw to Lewis for seven and Alexander came to mop up the rest of the batting, including the scalp of Bonner, whose knock included just two fours from 171 balls in four hours of occupation.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – A half-century from first-class newcomer Aaron Jones and solid batting from Jonathan Carter earned Barbados Pride a hard-fought draw against arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in the Regional 4-Day Championship on Sunday.
Jones was unbeaten on 52 and Carter made 46, as the Pride, set 248 for victory in a minimum of 30 overs, reached 117 for four in their second innings when stumps were drawn on the final day of their first-round match at Kensington Oval.
Half-centuries from left-handed opener Amir Jangoo, shaven-skull Ewart Nicholson and captain Denesh Ramdin prompted Red Force to declare their second innings on 257 for five about 10 minutes before the scheduled second break.
Jangoo led the way with 63, Nicholson hit 55, his second half-century of the match, and Ramdin followed up his first innings hundred with 56 not out to make him a shoo-in for the Player-of-the-Match award on his return to the Regional 4-Day scene for the first time in three years.
Barbados-born fast-medium bowler Roshon Primus sent shivers through the dressing room of the Pride when he had Shayne Moseley caught at long-leg for three from a top-edged hook and fellow left-handed opener Anthony Alleyne was caught behind for the same score off successive deliveries in the second over.
When wicketkeeper/batsman Mario Rampersaud was lbw for a duck, offering no stroke to a delivery from Marlon Richards, the Pride were 15 for three, but Carter arrived to ease their nerves with an 87-run stand with Jones.
When Carter was bowled for 46 playing forward to a delivery from off-spinner Bryan Charles, Jones was 46 and he duly reached his 50 to bring the match to a close.
Earlier, Red Force started the day on 31 without loss, choosing discretion as the best part of valour as their top order batted resolutely to put them in a secure, if not match-winning position.
The breakthrough came when Jeremy Solozano, pushing forward, was caught behind for 34 off Pride captain Kevin Stoute, bowling his medium-fast stuff, and part-time off-spinner Kenroy Williams had Jangoo caught down the leg side to leave Red Force 99 for two.
Nicholson anchored a 57-run stand for the third wicket with Isaiah Rajah which carried Red Force past 150 before two wickets in three balls left them 156 for four.
West Indies off-spinner Ashley Nurse bowled Rajah for two and had Tion Webster caught at leg-slip from a sweep.
Nicholson got together with Ramdin to add 50 before he was caught at extra-cover off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, leaving his captain and Primus to belt 52 from 49 balls in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand before the declaration.
Red Force face Jamaica Scorpions in the next round, starting at the Brian Lara Cricket Ground on Thursday in Trinidad.
Pride have just two days to prepare for their next match against Leeward Islands Hurricanes, starting on Wednesday at Kensington Oval in Barbados, where a rest day has been scheduled following the second day, due to a state funeral for former Barbados Governor-General, Sir Clifford Husbands.

Bonus Points
(a) Batting and bowling points awarded for performances in the first 110 overs of each team’s first innings only and retained whatever the result of the match.
A maximum of five batting points will be awarded based on runs scored by each team as follows:
200 to 249 runs – 1 point
250 to 299 runs – 2 points
300 to 349 runs – 3 points
350 to 399 runs – 4 points
400 runs or over – 5 points
A maximum of three bowling points will be awarded based on wickets taken by each team as follows:
3 to 5 wickets taken – 1 point
6 to 8 wickets taken – 2 points
9 to 10 wickets taken – 3 points
For the avoidance of doubt, “wickets taken” shall relate exclusively to batsmen dismissed under Laws 30 to 39 inclusive and to batsmen retired out.

Each team must declare its pace bowlers to the Match Referee on the team sheet at the Toss. Points will only be awarded to those wickets taken by pace bowlers who have been declared on the team sheet at the Toss.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies confirmed today that Jamaica Scorpions opener Garth Garvey was fined for a breach of the Code of Conduct in the Digicel 4-Day Tournament during the first round of matches which ended on Sunday.
Garvey was reported by on-field umpires Nigel Duguid and Danesh Ramdhanie, along with reserve umpire Nandkumar Shivsankar, for a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct during the match between the Scorpions and Guyana Jaguars at the Guyana National Stadium.
Match referee Colin Stuart imposed a fine of 10 per cent of Garvey’s match fee, after he breached paragraph 1.2 of the Code of Conduct by showing dissent at the umpire’s decision by delaying his departure from the wicket, when he was adjudged lbw off the fourth delivery of the first over in the Scorpions’ first innings.
The player admitted to the offence and accepted the imposition of the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
