Private schools in Manhattan have crossed the $50,000-a-year threshold, with median tuition fees for such schools in the city jumping a full 23 percent in just five years, according to the National Association of Independent Schools. At Riverdale Country School, for example, total cost—including tuition and fees for books and class trips—hit $52,050 this fall. “It’s just a bad problem getting worse,” said the head of Trinity, John Allman. At Allman’s school, tuition and fees totalled $50,355 for 12th-graders this year. “The funding model for independent schools like ours is broken.”
