World T20 to be held every two years

The inclusion of another World Twenty20, probably to be held in South Africa, was proposed after the ICC was surprised by the amount of revenue raised by the recent competition in India.

Under the original schedule, the next World Twenty20 was not due to take place until 2020, when Australia will be the hosts, but after talks between the ICC and its broadcaster, Star Sports, it has now been agreed the tournament will be held every two years, with another to be pencilled in for 2022.

Unfortunately, it would appear that the plans for a two-division Test championship and a one-day league for 50-over cricket will not be sanctioned at this meeting. A shame. I really hope that these plans are not permanently shelved.

Or maybe not. The ICC decided today to delay taking a decision on whether to hold the World T20 in 2018 till October.

Quote: "It came up for discussion. In principle the Board supported the possibility of at least holding an additional World T20 in 2018," Richardson said after the annual conference. "There is a gap in the Future Tours Programme calendar for it to take place. But again it depends whether it is worth it or not - we have got a broadcast agreement in place with Star. They need to be consulted. Their views need to be sought.

"We need to negotiate a value for that tournament. We would have loved to have made a decision this time, but we are not ready yet. We need to work through the details with Star and then make a decision in October."
