A 16-year-old girl was shot dead while babysitting her little cousin inside their Brooklyn apartment Tuesday — and now cops are looking for her boyfriend, police sources said.

Shemel Mercurius moved four years ago from her native Guyana to the East Flatbush apartment she shared with her aunt and cousin, relatives said.

The teen was with her boyfriend, watching over 3-year-old Josia, when gunfire rang out and she was hit several times just before 6 p.m. in the sixth-floor pad in the Flatbush Gardens on Brooklyn Ave. near Foster Ave., according to police sources.

Rescuers found Shemel semi-conscious and rushed her to Kings County Hospital, but she couldn’t be saved.

Josia was unharmed in the bloodshed, cops said.

Shemel’s parents still live in Guyana, said her devastated grandmother, Joan Mercurius, 70.

EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (WABC) --Police investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl who was fatally shot in Brooklyn Tuesday evening while babysitting a cousin have recovered surveillance video that seems to capture the suspects on camera.

Authorities say a young man and a young woman were initially seen getting into the elevator of the building on Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush together, but for unknown reasons, the male got off on the floor below the shooting while the female got off on the sixth floor, where the victim lives.

The young man then climbed the stairs and emerged on the sixth floor, where the victim, Shemel Mercurius, was seen in her doorway. When the young man emerged from the stairwell, she closed the door.

The male suspect, apparently holding a gun or a rifle, then pushed his way into the apartment, with the young woman following behind him. After the shooting, the pair fled the building. It all happened around 6 p.m.

Mercurius, a student at Edward R. Murrow High School, was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was reportedly semi-conscious when EMS arrived and was able to say the name of a male to police. Her 3-year-old cousin was not injured.

Detectives are looking to talk to people who know her, including her boyfriend, who has not been located.

The victim's father, Dexter Mercurius, said they know who did it.

"I don't know why this happened," he said. "Before she passed away, she called out the person's name, so she knew the person. She told the police the person's name, so they got the name of the person, but I don't know who the person is right now."Shemel Mercurius was reportedly shot several times. Latoya Pryce is the cousin's mother, Shemel's aunt."I said, 'What happened?', and he said Shemel died," she said. "I said how? 'The man take the gun and go pow.'"Relatives say the motive for the shooting is still not clear, but Dexter Mercurius said his daughter had an order of protection against a former boyfriend. But he is not the young man his daughter named before she died. Still, he is desperate for an arrest in the case."I need police to find this guy," he said, "I'm not going to leave this alone. I'm not going to leave this alone."
