ST. LOUIS (AP) — For the second time in three months, a St. Louis jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a huge award over claims that its talcum powder causes cancer.
The jury deliberated eight hours Monday before ordering the company to pay $55 million to a South Dakota woman who blamed her ovarian cancer on years of talcum powder use.
In February, another St. Louis jury awarded $72 million to the family of an Alabama woman who died from ovarian cancer, which she said was caused by using Johnson & Johnson's baby powder and other talcum products.
New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson will appeal the latest ruling.
I believe that there may be many similar judgements to come in regards to this talcum powder issue. It's important to note that Johnson and Johnson didn't know that this product would have caused this problem. However, they were the ones that produced the product so justice demands that they are liable.
I reckon it will be interesting to see what the tests will show if they are done as I have never heard of baby powder causing cancer or someone dying in the process and it can happen so I wonder if Johnson and Johnson will pay the money they are expected to pay to the families. Johnson and Johnson must be spending a lot of money in the court justice system and at the moment it looks like they may not win will have to see what happens in the coming days and weeks to see which side will win. I hope more evidence comes that prove that it was from this baby powder and wonder how long this case will go on for won't be surprised if it goes on till end of the year.
