Umar Akmal complains to Imran Khan on batting slot, earns PCB wrath

Karachi: Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has come under fire from the team management for allegedly requesting former captain Imran Khan to put in a word to the team management about pushing him up in the batting slot.

A furious former skipper Ramiz Raza wants the team management to bench Akmal junior for his selfish attitude.

"I am very angry with Umar's behavior. Whenever he meets with a former great, he ends up talking about having his batting order changed. My heart says that for his behavior Umar should be sat out in the next match," Ramiz said on Geo News channel.

It was learnt that when Imran dropped in to meet the Pakistan players for a pep talk before the crucial game against India on Sunday, Umar took the opportunity to ask him to tell the captain (Shahid Afridi) to send him to bat in the top order.

TV channels showed footage of Umar talking about it to Imran and the former great than turning around and telling someone that Umar should be sent to bat up the order.

Ramiz said that he was disappointed that Umar complained to Imran knowing well they were television cameras around them.

"Teams are never selected in such manner," the former captain lamented.

A reliable source in the Pakistan Cricket Board told PTI that Chairman Shaharyar Khan, who is present in Kolkata, had not taken kindly to Umar's antics and had spoken to the team management about the incident in front of cameras.

Umar has a history of disciplinary problems and has been in the past been censured or fined several times by the board for his behavior.

Ramiz also supported the decision to invite Imran for a pep talk.

"Before the 1992 World Cup final also, Imran had invited Sir Viv Richards to our dressing room. But the purpose of his visit was not give us technical or tactical advice but just give us a motivational speech," Ramiz recalled.

It wouldn't be a Pakistan team with drama and infighting. Akmal was suspended from a T20 match earlier in the year due to breaching a code of conduct, although that was eventually lifted.

Personally, I have no idea what Afridi was thinking promoting himself and Akmal up the order in the match against India. Sarfraz Ahmed and Hafeez should have batted much higher up in the order than those two.

I wish Sammy would complain about his Batting position !

The disfunction within the Pakistan camp continues as it would appear that Afridi's decision to retire is going to be made for him as PCB chairman Shahryar Khan informed the media yesterday that the board and Afridi had a understanding that he would retire after the World T20 and hopes he honours that agreement.

Quote:"He is captain till the World Cup under this understanding and he has said he will retire after the event. Even if he changes his mind and wants to carry on we will have to see whether he can be picked as a player or not," Khan said.

Shahryar Khan also had bad news for Waqar Younis, hinting that his contract - which expires in June - is unlikely to be extended.

Quote:I discussed the matter with Wasim Akram and some other senior players and they said whether we appoint a foreigner or have a local coach he should be able to produce best results from the team.

"Personally I don't see anything wrong in having a foreign coach as we have done in the past. And Bob Woolmer was our best coach. I think the players need a cultural shock so we might have a foreign coach or a local coach."

This would seemingly clear the way for Viv to take over, should he still be interested in the position.

Waqar Younis had some pointed comments towards Umar Akmal in his post-match press conference:

PCB is all drama. There should be independence of speech. Besides I don't know why Afridi is still in the team, he is out of touch. Also Waqar's coaching style is not fitting the pakistanis, he should be retired. Even Akram and Aktar don't support Waqar.
