Windies women’s players robbed in South Africa

Two members of the West Indies women cricket team were reportedly robbed at their hotel during their camp in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on Friday.
Yesterday, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) communications and marketing manager Carole Beckford confirmed that there had been an “incident” but that players were not hurt and that police were investigating the matter.
However, Beckford would give no details.

However, according to a source with the team, two players were drugged and robbed of i-pads, iPhones, clothing, jewellery and cash following a birthday celebration for two members of the squad.
According to the source, on arrival players objected to the accommodation at the hotel since it lacked the required security, wifi, gym facilities, air-conditioning and suitable beds.

Complaints were made by members of the squad directly to the WICB, but they were forced to stay at the hotel, due to a lack of available alternatives.
The West Indies women will play three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches on their tour of South Africa ahead of the women’s World Cup to be held in India next month.

The first ODI is tomorrow.

Women's cricket teams deserve more protection. It's shocking to hear news of women cricketers being targeted. Adequate security has to be given to women's teams as they are more vulnerable than their male counterparts owing to obvious reasons. Right now, the culprits need to be nabbed, else the morality of the players can take a pounding.

Very unfortunate. The South African Authorities should have been aware of the problems at the location, and should have sought to ensure that adequate protection was put in place. This is an issue that should be addressed by the ICC.
