PPP not interested in Deputy Speaker position
November 10, 2015

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it has “no interest” in nominating someone to take up the position of Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly. The party’s General Secretary Clement Rohee told reporters on Monday that, following discussions among PPP executive members, it was decided that they will not nominate anyone for the post.
“We are not interested in that,” Rohee declared at a news conference at the PPP’s Freedom House headquarters in Georgetown.
Chief Whip of the PPP, Gail Teixeira, on August 17 had told Speaker Dr. Barton Scotland that the party had no nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker.
The PPP was slated to select someone from its list of Parliamentarians to occupy the post but when called upon by Dr. Scotland, Teixeira responded that the PPP has no nominee. There were reports that former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall would take up the post, but Rohee had denied the report. Rohee, however, noted that the post of Deputy Speaker is a very strategic position and the Party’s move has to do with parliamentary tactics which will be seen unfolding later on.
According to him, the Party has to decide how to tactically utilise its resources in the Parliament to make sure that it is not short-changed.
