Angry Australia players reject family accusations

Australia's cricketers have responded angrily to suggestions that the presence of their partners and children on tour contributed to the team's loss of the Ashes.

Members of the team have been incensed by stories written back home that depict their families as unnecessary distractions during the contest against England, and rejected outright the contention that they somehow brought on the team's poor batting displays in the Edgbaston and Trent Bridge Tests that effectively surrendered the Ashes to Alastair Cook's team.

The retiring captain Michael Clarke described allegations published in News Limited Group newspapers as "a load of shit" in a radio interview, while Mitchell Johnson singled out the Daily Telegraph columnist Rebecca Wilson in a series of tweets after reading a piece that claimed, among other things, that partners "all travel with them the entire time they are away".

It seems that when a team wins and the family is there, it is an inspiration and if it loses the same family is a distraction. Crazy stuff.

Wouldn't it be nice if idiot fans didn't insult Test teams by bringing families into explanations for results? Happens every time.

In this case, it wasn't fans; it was Ian Healy that blamed the wives and girlfriends.

I think cricket players should be allowed to have their families on tour but they must only make contact in person after a match has been completed.

Rather interestingly, the BCCI prohibited wives and girlfriends from accompanying the Indian team on their current tour of Sri Lanka.

I reckon families are supportive and should not be blamed if the team loses and some may feel the men are distracted, from the game and feel the women are to blame when in fact they were not to blame for what happened. I think it is just to shift the blame from what really happened and the players, maybe were stressed from playing so may have chosen to rest with their families for sometime which was a good choice. In India maybe they believe women should not be at the games, as they feel the men can be distracted and not give their full performance which is a wrong view.
