Venezuela praises T&T, Caribbean leaders for standing against US executive order

(Trinidad Guardian) – Venezuelan Ambassador Coromoto Godoy-Calderon has praised Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for supporting the repeal of the US executive order against Venezuela at the recent Summit of the Americas. Godoy-Calderon was speaking at the press conference by the Movement of Social Justice (MSJ) at its San Fernando headquarters, in support of Venezuela’s fight against social injustice and to commemorate Venezuela’s independence anniversary.


T&T is among several countries, trade unions, social activists and groups around the world supporting the call for US president Barack Obama to revoke his March 9 executive order, declaring Venezuela a threat to US national security. Godoy-Calderon said so far they have garnered more than 11 million signatures in Venezuela, more than three million in Cuba and thousands in T&T in support of the executive order repeal.

“We will be asking at every forum and every time we have an opportunity we will be clamouring for the repeal of this executive order.” Reflecting on the Summit of the Americas, held in Panama, on April 10 and 11, Godoy-Calderon said Caribbean leaders “spoke like giants, they were not afraid of the US.”

Declaring solidarity with Venezuela, MSJ president David Abdulah said it is quite clear that Obama’s decision for an executive order against Venezuela was an imperial act.

Abdulah described the action as a power using its power to bullying effect on another country which was violation of their right to self-preservation and independence.

“So we stand in solidarity with people of Venezuela against that executive order and must be seen in the wider context of the imperial agenda…and also control for energy, Venezuela having the largest oil reserves in the world and we see the US interference in the Middle East leading to ISIS and chaos.”

Abdulah said the MSJ is planning to host a public forum on the situation in Venezuela, Latin America and the Summit of the Americas in about a week.

Venezuela has received $5bn in financing from China, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says.

Venezuela is suffering from an acute economic crisis, as the price of its main export, oil, has almost halved over a year.

The money was for "development", he said on Sunday, but gave no details.

The announcement comes three months after Mr Maduro travelled to China - a major investor in the region.
