Murihead confident of amicable BCCI resolution

CEO of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Michael Murihead is confident that the current impasse with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be resolved amicably.

The WICB employee, speaking on OBSERVER Radio’s Good Morning Jojo Sports Show on Tuesday, said the process was delayed owing to the BCCI’s elections, but expressed confidence that the matter will be settled out of court and even without a cash payment by the regional board.

“They had no president that was in abeyance (ownership un-established), and they had no CEO and or secretary, so we really had nowhere to go to get resolution. They had their elections two months ago in January or early February and they have now, officials in place,” he said.

“They had their first meeting last weekend and I think this would have been an agenda item, and out of that, we are going to the next stage where they have promised that we are going to have a meeting. The resolution is simple that we will have the payoff repaid in matches, cricket, not the numbers I hear being bandied about,” he added.

West Indies, in October of last year, pulled out of a tour to India citing a dispute over players’ contracts.

West Indies was scheduled to play five ODIs, a Twenty20 and three Tests against India, but left after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala on October 17.

Murihead said the WICB is approaching planned discussions with an open mind.

“It could be that they could ask that instead of playing the Test matches that they play some more ODIs … it’s a matter of negotiations. We have not gotten to sit down with them but we are planning for a delegation to go … and not just be high-handed and go in saying this is who we are bringing, sort of amenable to sitting down and letting us have reasonable negotiations,” the CEO said.

It has been reported that the BCCI quantifies its losses as $41.97 million despite Sri Lanka helping to fill in the void caused by West Indies’ withdrawal by agreeing to play a five-match ODI series.[/size]

The WICB should not pay the BCCI a cent until they go to court to iron out the true amount that India lost after playing Sri-Lanka as a replacement. The fact that the BCCI may have rejected a replace team must also be taken into consideration.
