Phil Hughes was not wearing the most up-to-date helmet when a delivery from Sean Abbott struck him in the head, leaving him critically injured.

But the British company who made the helmet, Masuri, has refused to say if its newer model would have spared Hughes.

The former Test batsman was wearing an original Test helmet by Masuri when a short-pitched bowl bounced up and hit him behind his left ear. The area is not protected by the helmet so the cricketer can move his head while batting.

Not a fan of the  Aussies  but this is sad news . Wish him a speedy recovery

Almost 24-hours after the incident, Hughes still remains in a critical condition. As a result of the injury, Cricket Australia has abandoned a full round of Sheffield Shield matches. I think this is the right move as I doubt players and fans would be in the right frame of mind today.

According to reports ... it was a regulation short ball

This from Cricket Australia ...Hughes was 63 not out when the incident occurred, as the left-hander swung at a bouncer and misjudged his shot, taking the brunt of the delivery on the lower left side of the back of his head.

Here's what West Indian Legend Brian Lara currently in Australia had to say ....

"West Indies cricket great Brian Lara believes the injury to Phillip Hughes will have a significant effect on the psyche of bowlers around the world, but doesn't believe the bouncer should be eradicated from the game.

After finishing 18 holes at The Australian Open Pro-Am in Sydney on Wednesday morning, Lara passed on his well wishes to Hughes and his family.

He backed Cricket Australia's decision to abandon the round of Sheffield Shield, and believes the horrific injury sustained by Hughes at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday afternoon will have a significant impact on bowlers around the world.

"It will have a serious effect," Lara said.

"No bowler wants to be in that situation. You want to be able to go out there and give your full compliment of deliveries and test the batsman in all sorts of different ways, but that sort of end result is not what you aim for.

Well neither am I unless they are playing against a team I don't particularly care for ....

However that video and the footage on some of the news here was sickening to watch ...

I can't imagine what his mother who was at the ground must've felt when he fell to the ground face down ... which I imagine would've been another terrible jolt to the brain.  I would've been sick to my stomach !!!

I so hope he recovers fully from this ....... such a freak accident and so very sad !!!

I just heard on the BBC that he's undergong surgery to reduce  the swelling in his brain, meanwhile the Helmet manufacturer has come out with saying that the  Helmet is an Older model, which is why he was injured, as if thats some excuse...
