Clarke pays tribute to his 'brother' Hughes

Phillip Hughes has been taken to hospital after a sickening blow to the head left him motionless on the SCG pitch on day one of the Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia.

Three ambulances and a medivac helicopter attended to Hughes after he was struck midway through the day. Play was suspended when he left the field and then abandoned after he was conveyed to St Vincent's Hospital by ambulance. Players and officials were comforted at pitchside as Hughes was treated.

This doesn't sound good. Apparently, players and ground staff held up a white sheet to screen him from the spectators who were looking on. The latest reports say that Hughes is in critical condition.

When was the last time play was abandoned for the day after a player was injured like this?

I so hope and wish a speedy recovery for Phil Hughes ........ but spare a thought for the anguish the bowler, Sean Abbott must be going through !!!! :'(

A hospital spokesman confirmed Hughes had suffered a head injury and that he was rushed into surgery after scans were taken.

“He arrived in a critical condition and remains in a critical condition,” the spokeman said.

“I understand he was ventilated at the scene, and arrived at St Vincent’s on life support, then underwent scans and surgery.”

It will reportedly be 24-48 hours before the outcome of the surgery is clear.
