Not a caste system, more a tribal system .... as in the instance of the ruling tribes of each Emirate.

Backwardness made Calypso a rich woman: maaaannnnn, you having me showing my hand for Cal's response !

Why dont you tekk a "big money contract "  inna de middle east as well  ::LOL::

Actually in today times ... KSA is not that much of a money spinner and neither are any of the countries in the Persian Gulf EXCEPT ones salary is tax free and that depends on which country you're from and the tax laws, but salary wise nothing compares to the old days as today the life style is completely different and more enticing and luxurious depending on which country in the Middle East you are in .....

However, Ketchim you have to respect and appreciate that 'back in the day' and was a long while ago that KSA was considered a 'hardship posting' and I mean a hardship posting, especially as we were not living in the likes of an ARAMCO camp which was and still is pretty much like living in an enclosed USA village.

We lived among locals and non locals .....so it was abide by the culture and laws of the country etc. and we did have to abide ........2 years, mission accomplished salary and CV wise for Lord Calypso (who was a modern day Thessiger) and I would never ever return, but spent many, many more years in other more moderate countries in the Gulf and thoroughly enjoyed the lifestyle, modernity and tolerance of those countries particulary the UAE and Sultanate of Oman

....and you say it was backwardness .... but I prefer to say it was lack of education and more importantly expertise that those countries sadly lacked, but were financially more than able to pay for the expertise which has made them what they are today ......
