Despite America's frosty relations with the Communist island, US Secretary of State John Kerry cited Cuba as an example of a small nation which sent more than larger, richer states.
Its response has also won plaudits from humanitarian workers who say the international community's reaction has been lacking.
The BBC's Will Grant in Cuba says that, for President Raul Castro, this has also been an opportunity to build on the island's long-standing tradition of humanitarian aid to Africa.
The president shook the hands and embraced the 83 doctors and nurses who waved Cuban flags as they boarded the plane for West Africa, our correspondent adds.

LONDON, (Reuters) – Leading drugmakers plan to work together to accelerate development of an Ebola vaccine and produce millions of doses of the most effective experimental product for use next year.
Johnson & Johnson said on Wednesday that it aims to produce at least 1 million doses of its two-step vaccine next year and has already discussed collaboration with Britain’s GlaxoSmithKline, which is working on a rival vaccine.
The U.S. group’s head of research Paul Stoffels said the two companies would support each other’s work and could combine their vaccines if that made sense, while other companies without an Ebola treatment are ready to provide production capacity.
There is currently no proven vaccine against the deadly disease but several companies are racing to develop products. Clinical tests on GSK’s vaccine and another from NewLink Genetics are under way, while human tests on J&J’s vaccine will start in January.
The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes that tens of thousands of people in West Africa, including frontline healthcare workers, can start receiving Ebola vaccines from January as part of large-scale clinical trials.
“I have spoken with (GSK chief executive) Andrew Witty over the past few days several times as colleagues on how we are going to solve this,†Stoffels told reporters. “It might even be that we have to combine their vaccine with ours.â€
Notice the way they craftily announce their plans to the rest of the world. Instead of saying billions of dollars in profits they say millions of doses of vaccines. I have been asking in earlier blogs "is it possible that governments would introduce plague into their populations?" Is that conspiracy theory?
Well about two or three years ago Hillary Clinton publicly apologized to the Guatemalan people for the wrong done to them by the US government. So what was that wrong she was referring to without mentioning the wrong? They deliberately and intentionally infected parts of the Guatemalan population with Syphilis. Now why would they do something like that?
It would take five to ten years to carry out the same experiment on monkeys then another three to five years on humans. That is too much time investing without ROI.
How do they get away with it? They offer millions in bribes and kickbacks to the corrupt government officials- a small price to pay for billions in profits.
