Sure the extraction of oil sands and oil from shale produce high paying jobs. That activity produces oil, and  gas but at what price. Our environment may suffer. What about our drinking water?
Has anybody seen those movies "Gasland and Gasland II" which depicted what could happen if those gases get into our water supply?
