In that 3rd test Sobers of all people dropped Gavaskar and you just knew he would make WI pay:

In that series he accumulated 726 run - with one double century, 3 centuries and three fifties - a record for any batsman in his debut series. After that there was no looking back for this 'Bombay Bradman'.

Many would not remember Ajit Wadekar but for his time, India was a soft touch.

However, significantly, he reduced the occassions India lost and during his tenure India had a very respectable record. He was also a good lower middle order batsman and Captained the 71-72, Gavaskar series, tour to the Windies which he won 1-0! This was the first time they had ever taken a series against the Windies and in the West Indies to boot.

It would be another 35 years before it happened again in the West indies.

So apart from the statistical record Wadekar's tenure saw India being uplifted and was the best until Ganguly.

Statistically Dhoni is the most successful Indian Captain but, like Lloyd and Ponting, he had/ has a very good team.

Ganguly, much like Alan Border for Australia,  transformed the Indian team and how they were perceived from the timid, cowering, fragile Indians to a 'you do not want to mess with me' Indians with attitude backed with guts, determination and absolute fight. The image of Ganguly on the balcony at Lords, torso and all,  July 2002 was part of that process.

So Ganguly for me.

India have never won a test series in Australia and some captains mentioned may not have captained there.

So in the future whoever captains India to a series win in Australia will certainly be fondly remembered.
