SANGAKKARA VS CHANDERPAUL: A CLOSER LOOK

OK Folks:

* First of all, congrats to Sangakkara on his first test hundred at Lords.

* Congrats also to Shiv on his 46th NOT OUT(84*) in the Jamaica test----Shiv now ties Steve Waugh for most NOT OUTS by a batsman----hopefully he'll have the record all to himself in the Trinidad test.

* Shiv(11,327) needs 627 runs to surpass the great Lara(11,953)-----some diehard Lara supporters are already having nightmares.

* They ought to relax---Shiv will never lace Lara's boots----but he has done a great job lacing Shiv's boots---and that's all that matters. ;D

* Both have great numbers in tests----Sangakkara has scored 11,298 runs at an average of 58.53 while Shiv has scored 11,327 runs at an average of 52.19.


* But no way are Shiv and Sangakkara in the same league as the extraordinary greats in test cricket---Bradman, Sobers, Richards, Tendulkar and Lara.

* We'll focus on their performances against non-subcontinent teams.

LET'S LOOK AT SANGAKKARA'S TEST PERFORMANCE AGAINST NON SUBCONTINENT TEAMS


* We know Sangakkara has an extraordinary test average of 58.53----he is currently playing in his 123rd test at Lords----and he has scored an amazing 11,298 runs to date.

* But a closer look at Sangakkara's stats reveal that he has put up only good numbers against non subcontinent teams(Australia, South Africa, England and the West Indies).

CHECK THIS:

* In 69 tests against Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies, Sangakkara has scored 5203 runs at an ordinary(by his standard) average of 45.24

* But in 54 tests against subcontinent teams plus Zimbabwe, Sangakkara has scored 6095 runs at an amazing average of 78.24

CONCLUSION:

* While Sangakkara's overall average(58.53) is higher than the great Sobers(57.78), a closer look at his stats reveals that he has feasted on subcontinent teams(78.24 avg) while being average against the non subcontinent teams(45.24).


By the way, do you folks care to know what Chanderpaul's average is against non subcontinent teams(Aus, Eng, NZ, and SA) ?

* I am not saying Shiv is a better batsman than Sangakkara, but what I'm saying is the numbers don't lie----and
Shiv has averaged 50+ in 92 tests against non-subcontinent teams----Sanga has averaged 45.24 in 69 tests against non subcontinent teams).

Shiv is yet to score a test hundred against NZ in the Caribbean.

* He unfortunately ran out of partners in Jamaica---84*

* But a NOT OUT(84*) is as good as a hundred. ;D

* Hopefully Shiv will score his first hundred against NZ in the Caribbean in the next 2 tests.

Love Shiv, but this is not fair at all. Why don't you break it down proper Shiv vs Chanderpaul instead of "non subcontinent" and whatnot team by team home and away? You'd have a much better case then.
I know to look it up in statsguru, but I'll leave that to you to post it here.

PS: I agree that Sanga is bit of a home track bully BTW. His average 55+ certainly doesn't give you a whole picture. But surely would end up as one of the ATG regardless.

Why are you bringing "subcontinent" teams under the same bracket again? Ajmal is a world class spinner and Pakistan has more than decent pacers. It used to be even better before. I was looking for home and away average too BTW - especially vs Aus, SA, Eng etc.

Also you ought to break down Sangas career as a wicketkeeper vs pure batsman.
