The building, which opened as a mosque and cultural center in September 2011, was the site of an immense amount of controversy given its proximity to the site of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. The controversy sucked in everybody from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Michelle Bachmann, and President Obama weighed in. "Plans for the site will be announced at a later date,†a spokesman said.
