Yes, he has many outstanding test innings. And entertainings ones ( I loved how he brought up his 100s with sixes and fours - singles were for mortals!). As I said once before on this forum, the new book, MASTERLY BATTING: 100 greatest test innings, uses a series of algorithms to rank all recorded test innings. Lara has 5 in their rankings, tied with Bradman. No one else in the modern era has this many. His five dont include the 375, 277 or 400.
His ODI career was stella up until 1996 I think. He was averaging 47 and at one point looked like he was going to break Viv's ODI top-score record. Then Lara's ODI career seemed to crash and he went down the batting order.
Here's a brutal Lara test century, with Holding and Viv in the box watching:

I can't figure out how to use cricinfo's filter so as to find out what Lara's ODI average is batting 1,2 and 3.
EDIT - The reason Im asking is because he averaged 47 up until 1997, but then his average dropped big time.

Check out Shiv's average since 1998----43.77 avg with 10 100s and 49 50s----he was dropped by Otis Gibson----Otis should be lynched---hung from the tallest tree in Barbados for dropping Shiv.
