RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani court has indicted former Pakistani president and army chief, Pervez Musharraf, in the 2007 assassination of a former prime minister. Afsha Adil, a member of Musharraf's legal team, said Musharraf pleaded not guilty. Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in 2007 during a rally in the city of Rawalpindi. Prosecutor Chaudry Muhammed Azhar said the charges include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation for murder. Prosecutors have said Musharraf, who was president at the time, failed to properly protect her. Musharraf has faced a litany of charges relating to his rule since returning to the country in March from self-imposed exile. ...

why would musharraf go back to pakistan knowing this could happen

The reason that she was killed was because she stated that if elected she would normalise relations with India. The only thing keeping Pakistan together is a united hatred for India, other than that the country will fall apart as it is a very disjointed country.
Remember that it was Musharraf who was army chief when the line of control was breached at Kargill  which resulted in a mini war with India.
Nawas Sharrif was the prime minister and he too was interested in improving relations with India and was overthrown by Musharraf.
This scenario is being played out again as Sharrif is  trying to build bridges with India and just  a couple weeks ago 5 Indian soldiers were shot across the line of control with the present army chief Kianni  doing the same thing that Musharraf did when he was the army chief
