Re: Hashim Amla Named New South African Test Captain - bala24 - 06-03-2014 He is a calm and cool batsman. It is always said that good players are not always good captains.I don't know on what scale was chosen the captain.I don't doubt his captaincy, but it is hard to take the mantle after the 30's.SA would have been better off nurturing a youngster. Re: Hashim Amla Named New South African Test Captain - Kyle - 06-03-2014
I'm not disputing the fact that Amla has leadership qualities, and the fact that he is well behaved and gentle are certainly an asset to the team. However his record has shown that he isn't that keen to lead. He first resigned from the captaincy of his domestic team after only one year in charge, then later he resigned from his position as South African vice-captain. I'm just concerned about whether he can handle the pressure of being the man in charge for an extended period. And yes, AB is the test vice-captain.
Pretty sure about the SA vice captain thing, and if he did from domestic team as well, then probably not a good idea surely. You need someone who's up for it the whole way to take up the captaincy IMO. Quitting vice captaincy is no biggie, but quitting captaincy would be. I thought AB would've been better candidate myself - but perhaps AB turned down the offer or something? IDK. I've just watched this interview which he gave in May in which he said he would love to be captain but would prefer to give up keeping wicket if he got the job. At about 2:20 in the interview he says he is ready for the job and will give it his best shot ONCE it comes his way. As this interview was given before Hashim Amla announced that he was available to take the job, it seems likely that AB thought he would be the next captain. Re: Hashim Amla Named New South African Test Captain - Mail - 06-04-2014 Well AB isn't so best of luck to Amla and hope he works closely with Kirsten to maintain team spirit, he shows tactical prowess on the field of play and his batting is not affected. AB is 30 and Hash 31 so I cannot see either playing for much more than 4-5 years. Had AB been selected, I would have welcomed that or in fact anyone else. I am not a Saffer so in reality I do not really care. I have to admit the talk had always been that Amla did not want to lead. Whether that is speculation I know not. If I assume you are correct on your assertion, would I not be fighting the case for th otehr man? I was purely and simply commenting on Gina's surprise when it was no surprise to me. From the time Smith gave up I thought Hash would be offered the role on purely cricketing terms. In fact I really do not care who captains South Africa but like mot things we do debate. Finally I believe the Almighty created one race and that is the human race and he made us of different tribes so that we get to know each other...Ameen Re: Hashim Amla Named New South African Test Captain - Gina145 - 06-04-2014
I was purely and simply commenting on Gina's surprise when it was no surprise to me. The surprise was that someone who has always proved to be reluctant to lead should suddenly decide that he wanted to be captain in the first place. One of the most disturbing things I've read was the following statement from this article : "sources close to CSA have indicated Amla was persuaded to put his name in the hat, particularly as pressure mounts to pick a captain of colour." I really hope that isn't true.
