Charity is not just recommended by Islam, it is required of every financially stable Muslim. Giving charity to those who deserve it is part of Muslim character and one of the Five Pillars of Islamic practice. Zakat is viewed as “compulsory charityâ€; it is an obligation for those who have received their wealth from God to respond to those members of the community in need. Devoid of sentiments of universal love, some people know only to hoard wealth and to add to it by lending it out on interest. Islam’s teachings are the very antithesis of this attitude. Islam encourages the sharing of wealth with others and helps people to stand on their own and become productive members of the society.
[size=13pt]In Arabic it is known as zakat which literally means “purificationâ€, because zakat is considered to purify one’s heart of greed. Love of wealth is natural and it takes firm belief in God for a person to part with some of his wealth. Zakat must be paid on different categories of property — gold, silver, money; livestock; agricultural produce; and business commodities — and is payable each year after one year’s possession. It requires an annual contribution of 2.5 percent of an individual’s wealth and assets.[/size]

I extend greetings and best wishes to the Muslim community of Guyana as they commence Ramadan 2013.
This Holy Month is very dear to Muslims throughout the world, and offers the followers of Islam the opportunity to deepen their faith through prayer and acts of piety. It also promotes personal self-purification of body and mind by encouraging fasting, abstinence and the banishing of ill-thoughts and feelings. Ramadan is an exalted period, a time for Muslims to step aside from their worldly preoccupations and embrace a period of deep personal introspection, self-examination, sacrifice and charity. Through this process, Muslims deepen their faith and encourage goodness and harmony in their relations with each other and the wider society.
I am particularly pleased by the example of devotion and self-discipline demonstrated by Muslims during this period. I hope that Ramadan will encourage all of us to recognize the values of these virtues in our lives and in improving relations in our society.
A Happy and Holy Ramadan to all!
