In a Fox News Sunday interview, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared sentiments with Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska that Trump’s actions were an “unconstitutional slop.”
She said the “When you look at those executive orders, either the kindest thing I could say is he doesn’t know what he’s talking about or something is wrong there, something is very, very wrong there. So, to characterize them as even accomplishing what they set out to do as something that is — that would take the place of an agreement is just not so.”
President Trump followed through on his threat over the weekend by signing executive orders that include the following:
Establish a payroll tax holiday through the end of the year for Americans earning less than $100,000 a year.
Defer student loan payments through the end of the year.
Continue eviction moratoriums.
Extend enhanced unemployment benefits that expired last week, albeit at a reduced level of $400 instead of the prior $600.
Pelosi describes the actions taken by the President as illusional.
“So, these are illusions, and they really do not — what he calls in our bill unnecessary, let’s just review the difference. First of all, millions of children in our country are food insecure. Our bill addresses that with tens of billions of dollars, to feed the children.”
She added, “The Republican bill has $250,000. Well, our bill addresses those who are on the brink of eviction, we use the numbers from the Princeton Eviction Lab and the Low Income Housing Coalition to show how many people will be evicted and what their needs are and that comes to — it could come to tens of billions of dollars. The Republican bill has nothing.”
The speaker also charged that the President is “undermining Social Security and Medicare.”
She said that there are glaring weaknesses in the President’s executive orders, “which don’t give the money, enhanced benefit, but with the complicated formula there it will take a while if at all to accomplish, to put money in the pockets of the American people.”
