Guyana on track for 1st minority government says associated press

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The man expected to be the next president of Guyana says he is likely to run a minority government that will not control parliament in the sharply divided South American country.
Donald Ramotar says partial results from Monday's election show his People's Progressive Party is on track to win more seats than two opposition parties. But Ramotar says it will likely fall short of an absolute majority.
It would be the first minority government since Guyana achieved self-governance from Britain in 1953 or independence in 1966. Analysts say it will require political compromises in a country largely divided along ethnic lines, between people of Indian and African descent.
Preliminary complete results were expected later Thursday.
