WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama prepared to take the ceremonial oath of office Monday in the nation's capital as visitors and local residents streamed toward the National Mall to witness the event.

The sun hadn't yet poked above the trees across the Anacostia River a mile or so east of the U.S. Capitol when Craig Gordon and Malikah Al-Amin spilled off a bus from New Haven, Conn. They had boarded the bus at midnight "and got pretty much no sleep on the way down," the 47-year-old Mr. Gordon said.
"But we wouldn't have missed this," he said. "We wanted to be a part of history."
